FGV secures partnership to train leaders in Mozambique

The president of Fundação Getulio Vargas, Professor Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, welcomed one of the main leaders of the African continent, former Mozambique President Joaquim Chissano, on September 17.

The former president came to Brazil to sign the Memorandum of Cooperation between Fundação Getulio Vargas and Fundação Joaquim Chissano (FJC). FGV’s president hosted a lunch event in honor of the visitor, among other diplomats from MozambiqueAngolaPortugal and Brazil, as well as FGV directors.

After signing the memorandum, former president Chissano gave a lecture in a conference on “Economic Development and Qualification of Human Capital in Africa”. Joaquim Chissano is regarded as one of the great heroes behind his country’s independence, taking over as Mozambique’s president on October 19, 1986. He was democratically elected in 1994, after the demise of Samora Machel, who fought alongside him in the struggle for independence.

The Center for Cooperation with Africa and Portugal (NuCAP) of FGV’s International Affairs Division (DINT), through professor Marcus Vinicius Rodrigues, and supported by the director, professor Bianor Cavalcanti, has held a partnership with the Instituto de Governação Paz e Liderança (IGPL), which is affiliated with FJC, in efforts to bring FGV’s executive training programs to Mozambique.

According to Marcus Vinicius, FGV currently has a partner in Mozambique fully capable of training the country’s executives. He pointed out that FGV’s know-how can help promote the African country’s development. “Mozambique is a brother-country and has the potential to become the third largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer in the world, after Qatar and Australia, as well as the ‘largest player’ in the African oil & gas market. But in order to reach this status, the country needs not only major investments – some of which are already available –, but especially managerial and organizational training. And FGV can be an important contributor in this front”, he said.
