FGV becomes founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

FGV takes a leading role in the search for solutions that promote a fairer future, free from hunger and poverty.

Fundação Getulio Vargas has joined an initiative created by the Brazilian G20 presidency, taking a leading role in the search for solutions to promote a fairer future, free from hunger and poverty.

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is an international coalition that brings together governments, institutions and organizations dedicated to eradicating hunger and poverty in the world. The initiative seeks to promote effective public policies and disseminate successful practices, with a focus on expanding social programs that can be replicated in different countries. Harnessing the technical and intellectual support of institutions such as FGV, the alliance aims to strengthen national and international capacities to tackle these global crises.

“FGV’s membership of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is in line with its mission to contribute to Brazil’s socioeconomic development. Over the course of 80 years, we have perfected the art of getting complex projects off the ground and generating positive impacts for the Brazilian people. Our participation aims, once again, to put our technical and intellectual capacity at the service of Brazil and the world,” said FGV’s president, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal.

The fight against social inequalities is high on the Brazilian agenda, and the country can offer important lessons to other developing countries. “Last year, 24.4 million Brazilians stopped going hungry in Brazil, but the challenge is still huge. Hunger is a scourge that affects around 733 million people across the world,” said the minister for social development, welfare, families and the fight against hunger, Wellington Dias. “The alliance seeks to expand the adoption of effective national programs, on a large scale, to end hunger and poverty. Thanks to FGV’s expertise in producing and disseminating knowledge, its membership will make a major contribution to this collective effort and will be another step toward the success of this initiative.”

As one of its first actions within the alliance, FGV will organize a special session on the topic during the next Doha Forum, an annual event that brings together global leaders and intellectuals in a variety of sectors. The next meeting, scheduled for December 2024, will be attended by Minister Wellington Dias. “This initiative marks the beginning of a cycle of coordinated actions involving FGV, the Brazilian Social Development Ministry and the Brazilian Foreign Ministry to consolidate the alliance as a transformative force in the fight against inequalities on a global scale,” said Marlos Lima, FGV’s international director.
