Starting this month, Fundação Getulio Vargas will host meetings with the national coordinators of the Brazilian G20 summit in its main building in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. FGV will receive more than 100 Brazilian and foreign diplomats who are involved in organizing G20-related activities. Students will also support FGV professors and researchers who have previously collaborated with the G20. All FGV undergraduate students will be invited to work as volunteers, helping diplomats organize the event.
FGV’s international director, Professor Marlos Lima, stresses the importance of this initiative. “The Brazilian G20 summit is the most important event in Brazilian diplomacy in recent decades. The world is watching us. FGV’s mission is to promote Brazil’s development, so we would never fail to do our part and make our contribution,” he says.
G20
The G20 is an economic cooperation forum for the world’s 19 largest economies, plus the European Union and, since 2023, the African Union. With an annual rotating presidency, G20 summits are held in one-year cycles, involving various ministerial and technical meetings that culminate in a summit of heads of state and government. In Brazil, the G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19, 2024.
FGV’s track record
Since 2022, when it was agreed that Brazil would take on the rotating presidency of the G20 from December 2023, various FGV experts have actively contributed to the success of what looks set to be the culmination of Brazilian diplomacy in recent decades.
FGV has played a crucial role on several fronts, from planning the events and defining national priorities to participating in engagement groups, such as the T20, W20 and O20. These activities are carried out in close collaboration with the federal government, the Foreign Ministry and other entities involved in the organization work, at all levels of government.
